Heba Mustafa, Senior Fire Protection Engineer

What excites you most about fire engineering?

I’ve always been passionate about fire protection, particularly the problem-solving side of it. I enjoy understanding how a project is actually designed, coordinated and built, looking at the bigger picture and finding practical solutions to the challenges that come along the way. I also enjoy bringing that practical understanding together with what I’ve learned through my Master’s in Fire Science and the Australian Standards. For me, it’s not just about applying the code, but understanding the intent behind it and ultimately contributing to safer buildings.

What’s a common misconception about fire engineering that you wish more people understood?

I think a common misconception is that fire engineering is simply about applying codes and standards. We sometimes forget the intent behind them, which is ultimately to protect lives and buildings. A fire protection system may only ever be needed once, but when that moment comes, it needs to work. That’s why fire safety should always be given the importance it deserves.

How have your experiences shaped the way you approach engineering projects?

My experience has shaped me to approach challenges with a practical mindset. I enjoy problem-solving, looking at different options, and finding solutions that balance fire safety, compliance and the needs of the project. Working across different projects has also taught me when to step back, look at the bigger picture, ask the right questions and work closely with other disciplines to achieve the best outcome.

What excites you most about electrical engineering?

I enjoy solving problems and designing electrical systems that are safe, practical, and energy efficient. Every project is different, so there is always something new to learn. It's rewarding to see a design become a completed building that people use every day.

What’s a common misconception about electrical engineering that you wish more people understood?

Many people think electrical engineering is only about power and wiring. In reality, we also design lighting, communications, security, fire systems, and other building services while making sure everything meets safety standards and works together.

What’s the best career advice you’ve received?

Focus on details. Don’t be afraid to ask questions.

Outside of work, what hobbies or interests do you enjoy?

Outside of work, I enjoy riding my bicycle and playing soccer. Over the last two months, I've really enjoyed following the FIFA World Cup and the Tour de France. It's been a fantastic time for sports fans like me.
