Please join us in welcoming Frank Soa and Mahsa Torkaman

Meet Frank Soa | Associate Hydraulic Engineer

With more than 30 years of experience in hydraulic engineering, Frank Soa has delivered complex building services projects across Australia and New Zealand. Throughout his career, he has contributed to major healthcare, transport, aviation, commercial, civic and sports infrastructure projects, bringing a practical and solutions-focused approach to every project.

We sat down with Frank to learn more about his career journey, what led him to join erbas™, and what he enjoys outside of work.

What inspired your journey into hydraulic engineering?

I never actually set out to become a hydraulic engineer. Along my travels, however, I developed a real appreciation for the importance of clean water and reliable plumbing. Seeing how access to these basic services can vary around the world made me realise how much they contribute to our quality of life, and that's a perspective I've carried throughout my career. I've been lucky enough to work on some important community projects, including hospitals, universities, and airports. Each one brought its own challenges, and I've enjoyed working with a lot of clever people along the way. Looking back, that's probably been one of the best parts of the job.

What led you to join erbas™?

I've been aware of erbas™ for several years and have crossed paths with many of its engineers throughout my career. I've always heard good things about the people and the work they do. The projects are the kind of projects I enjoy working on, and at this stage of my career I was looking for an opportunity where I could contribute my experience, support younger engineers and continue learning myself.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with family, playing golf, getting out on the water and travelling when I can. I'm also an avid podcast listener and enjoy a wide variety of topics, from history and current affairs to business and technology. One of my more memorable travel experiences was walking part of the Camino de Santiago in Spain. I'd like to go back one day and complete the journey properly.

Meet Mahsa | Mechanical Engineer

Mahsa joins erbas™ as a Mechanical Engineer, bringing international experience and a passion for solving complex engineering challenges. Having worked across different countries and engineering systems, she enjoys applying technical knowledge and practical thinking to create solutions that have a real-world impact. We spoke with Mahsa about her engineering journey, career highlights and life outside of work.

What excites you most about mechanical engineering?

What excites me most about mechanical engineering is that every project presents a new challenge to solve. I enjoy the process of combining technical knowledge, engineering standards, and practical thinking to create solutions that work in the real world. There is something incredibly rewarding about seeing a project progress from an idea on a drawing to a functioning building that people use every day.

Can you share a project or achievement you’re particularly proud of?

One achievement I am particularly proud of is becoming a certified Mechanical Proficient Engineer Grade 2 in my home country and subsequently having my qualifications and experience successfully assessed by Engineers Australia. As an engineer who has built a career across different countries and engineering systems, these milestones represented much more than professional recognition, they confirmed that the skills, knowledge, and experience I had developed could be applied and valued internationally.

What attracted you to join erbas™?

What attracted me to erbas™ was its strong reputation for delivering high-quality engineering solutions across a diverse range of projects. The opportunity to work on everything from residential developments to complex healthcare facilities was particularly appealing, as it offers continuous learning and professional growth. Just as importantly, I was drawn to the collaborative culture and the chance to work alongside experienced engineers who are passionate about delivering great outcomes for clients.

Outside of work, what hobbies or interests do you enjoy?

Outside of work, I enjoy playing the piano, exercising, and reading. I find that music helps me stay creative, exercise keeps me focused and disciplined, and reading allows me to keep learning both professionally and personally. These activities provide a great balance and help me bring fresh energy to my work.
