Jae Eichorn, Associate Director and Fire Protection & Hydraulic Engineer, is our latest addition to our newly created Brisbane office. From his beginnings as a plumber to leading complex, multi-disciplinary projects, Jae’s career has been defined by a desire to solve problems, protect communities, and deliver systems that stand the test of time.
Where Curiosity Meets Practical Problem-Solving
For Jae, engineering is a constant challenge to innovate.
“Engineering is where curiosity meets practical problem solving. It’s about understanding the principles that underpin everything, whether natural or man-made, and using that knowledge to shape better outcomes. I’m fascinated by how engineering allows us to push boundaries, making things stronger, faster, more efficient, and more sustainable.”
Finding a Niche in Life Safety and Essential Services
Jae’s pathway into fire protection and hydraulics began with hands-on experience.
“With a background as a plumber, I was always curious about how system designs were conceived and specified. That curiosity evolved into a desire to deepen my technical knowledge while contributing to public safety. Fire protection and hydraulic services offered the perfect blend, addressing both hygiene and life safety, allowing me to design systems that protect people’s health and safeguard lives.”
Projects that Make a Difference
Over the years, Jae has contributed to major projects across Queensland’s healthcare, rail, infrastructure, and low-cost housing sectors.
“Each project brings unique challenges such as meeting stringent safety requirements in healthcare and transport, or delivering cost-effective solutions for housing. Knowing my work helps create safer, more functional spaces for communities, regardless of scale or budget, is incredibly rewarding.”
Dispelling Misconceptions
Jae is quick to point out that fire protection and hydraulics are not “add-ons” to building design.
“They’re critical disciplines. Fire protection is among the most regulated areas in building services, while hydraulics demands complex coordination between multiple stakeholders to ensure systems are safe and efficient. They may not always be the most visible elements, but they are foundational to a project’s success.”
Joining erbas™ to Build Something Bigger
“I was drawn to erbas™ by the opportunity to join right at the start of establishing the Queensland office. It was a chance to help build a solid foundation for growth while contributing to a team with a clear vision for the future.”
The Power of Collaboration
“I’ve learned that collaboration is central to effective engineering. Being in the middle, learning from those with different experiences while sharing insights with others, has shown me there’s more than one way to achieve success. Staying open-minded and valuing diverse perspectives has shaped the way I solve problems.”
Looking Ahead – The Next Decade in Fire Protection & Hydraulics
“I see these disciplines becoming increasingly sought-after. As buildings grow more complex and sustainability becomes critical, water security will be a major focus - arguably the ‘next oil rush.’ This will drive innovation in how we manage, conserve, and distribute water efficiently and safely.”
Words to Work By
“The best advice I’ve received is that there’s never a stupid question. If something is on your mind, chances are others are thinking it too, they’re just hesitant to ask.”
Outside the Office
Away from the construction site, Jae finds relaxation in his garden.
“I’m an avid ‘lawnie.’ There’s something incredibly satisfying about a freshly mowed, perfectly cross-hatched patch of lawn. It’s a project that takes time and patience, and I enjoy working through the seasons to see results evolve.”
With a career built on technical expertise, curiosity, and a genuine commitment to protecting people and communities, we welcome Jae to the Brisbane team.
